Why Study
in Malta
Choosing to study in Malta as an international student offers a unique combination of quality education and an international lifestyle. At STC Higher Education, students benefit from a safe environment, an English-speaking community, and internationally recognised qualifications. Moreover, Malta offers a vibrant culture, beautiful Mediterranean surroundings, and easy access to the rest of Europe, making it an attractive destination for higher education.
However, international students who wish to study in Malta for more than 90 days must apply for a National Long-Stay Study Visa (Type D) before travelling to Malta. This visa allows students to enter the country legally and begin their studies at a licensed educational institution such as STC Higher Education.
Students from non-EU / non-EEA countries who plan to study in Malta as an international student for more than three months must obtain a study visa before arrival. EU and EEA nationals do not require a visa, but they may need to register their stay if studying long term in Malta.
How to Apply
Students must apply for a study visa via the Maltese Embassy, Consulate, or an official Visa Application Centre like VFS Global. Applications should be submitted at least 9 weeks before the course starts, as processing can take time.
Residence Permit After Arrival
Once students arrive in Malta, those staying longer than 90 days must apply for a student residence permit. This residence card allows students to remain in Malta legally for the duration of their studies.
Working While Studying
International students who study in Malta may work part-time, typically up to 20 hours per week, after completing the first three months of their studies.
Documents Typically Required
Important Notice
Students who choose to study in Malta as an international student must complete a health screening within the first two weeks of arrival, ideally before their course begins. Any issues identified during the screening may prevent the finalisation of the residency application.
