Every organisation that relies on technology also needs to think about security. From protecting customer information to securing networks and responding to cyber incidents, cybersecurity has become an important part of how organisations operate.
The BSc (Hons) Cybersecurity at STC Higher Education gives you the opportunity to explore this field from different perspectives. You will learn how cyber threats work, how organisations can reduce their risks and how professionals investigate and respond to security incidents.
The degree is awarded by the University of Wolverhampton and combines technical knowledge with practical and professional skills.
Why Is Cybersecurity Important?
A security breach can affect much more than a computer system. It can expose sensitive information, interrupt services and create significant risks for an organisation.
This is why cybersecurity professionals need to understand both the technology and the risks surrounding it. Throughout the degree, you will explore how organisations protect their systems, networks and information while considering the different ways cyber threats can develop.
You will also learn to look at security from different angles, from identifying vulnerabilities and strengthening systems to investigating incidents after they occur.
Explore Different Areas of Cybersecurity
One of the biggest advantages of studying cybersecurity is the variety of areas you can explore.
You will develop your understanding of Computer Networking, Network Security and Cybersecurity Architecture and Operations, learning how secure networks and systems work. You will also explore Ethical Hacking, giving you insight into how security weaknesses can be identified and addressed.
As you progress, the degree moves into areas such as Digital Forensics, Cyber Threat Intelligence, Advanced Networks and Risk and Cybersecurity Management. These subjects introduce different approaches to detecting threats, investigating incidents and managing security at an organisational level.
Learn Through Problem-Solving
Cybersecurity often involves asking questions.
What happened? Where did the vulnerability come from? What information has been affected? How can the organisation reduce the risk in the future?
The programme encourages you to approach these types of questions systematically. You will develop the ability to analyse information, identify problems and consider appropriate solutions while building your technical understanding.
In your final year, the Project and Professionalism module gives you the opportunity to bring together your knowledge and apply it to a larger project.
Is This Degree Right for You?
You might be interested in cybersecurity if you enjoy technology but also like investigating problems and understanding how things work.
You do not need to know everything about cyber threats before starting. The degree develops your knowledge progressively, while giving you the opportunity to explore different areas of the field.
It can also suit students who enjoy a combination of technical and analytical work. Alongside cybersecurity knowledge, you will develop problem-solving, communication, project management and teamwork skills.
Where Can Cybersecurity Take You?
Cybersecurity skills can apply across a wide range of organisations. Financial institutions, government departments, technology companies, consultancies and businesses across different industries all need to manage digital security risks.
Depending on your interests and experience, potential career paths include Cybersecurity Specialist, Security Manager, Cyber and Information Security Analyst, Cybersecurity Consultant, Information Security Officer and Computer Forensic Specialist.
The degree can also provide a foundation for further academic study. Graduates can progress to the MSc Cyber Security or the International Master in Business Administration. A progression route to the MSc Computer Science may also be available, subject to academic review and approval by the University of Wolverhampton.
Full-Time or Part-Time Study
The BSc (Hons) Cybersecurity offers full-time and part-time study options.
Each degree level takes one academic year full-time or two academic years part-time, allowing you to choose a format that works with your existing commitments. Lectures are delivered face to face at STC Higher Education.
